Resume format is the structural and visual system used to organize a resume. It includes section order, chronology, headings, spacing, typography, and the relationship between summaries, skills, and work history.

The main formats are reverse-chronological, functional, and hybrid; they differ in how they prioritize dated experience and skill groups. Visual style is separate: two reverse-chronological resumes can use different typography while following the same underlying structure; a useful format helps a reader find the target role, relevant experience, dates, skills, and education quickly. It should also preserve a clear text reading order when the file is parsed; for most applicants, a reverse-chronological resume is the clearest starting point; the chosen structure should remain readable after export, preserve a logical text order, and make employers, titles, dates, and achievements easy to connect.

For example, a reverse-chronological format can make recent experience easy to scan, while a hybrid format can add a focused skills summary.
