Do I need a resume summary?

No. A resume summary is optional. Include one when it helps a reader understand your professional identity, specialty, seniority, or transition before reviewing your experience. Skip it when it only repeats the target title or uses generic traits such as “hardworking” and “results-driven.”
A summary can help when your experience spans related functions, you are changing careers, a specialty or license is central to your fit, or the strongest evidence is spread across several roles. An early-career applicant with a clear degree, internship, and target role may not need a summary. The space could be more valuable for skills, projects, or experience. Weak: “Motivated professional seeking a challenging position where I can grow.” This takes space but gives the employer no evidence. Useful: “Customer support specialist with four years of SaaS experience handling technical escalations and improving help-center workflows. Partnered with product teams to document recurring issues and reduce repeat tickets.” The second version identifies a role, context, and defensible contribution. The experience section should support those claims. Read only your name, headline, and summary. Can a reader identify the kind of work you do and the evidence they should expect below? Then compare the summary with the first half of the page. If it duplicates the same phrases without adding orientation, shorten it or remove it.
