How do I ask for a referral?
Ask for a job referral respectfully with the right context, supporting materials, and an easy way for the contact to decline without pressure.
Ask after you have identified a specific role and can explain why your background fits it. Contact someone who knows your work or has enough context to make an informed introduction. Share the job link, a tailored resume, and two or three relevant points. Make it easy to decline.
A former colleague who worked closely with you may be comfortable referring you directly. A new contact from one conversation may be better placed to answer a question or explain the hiring process. Do not ask a stranger to certify work they have never seen. A concise request can look like this: Hi Maya, I saw the operations analyst role at Northstar and plan to apply this week. The position's process reporting and vendor coordination work matches the projects we handled together at Atlas. Would you feel comfortable referring me? I can send the job link and a tailored resume. No pressure if you do not know the team or prefer not to. Adapt the wording to your actual relationship. Do not copy a message that claims familiarity you do not have. Include the exact role and job link, why you are a credible match, your current resume, any deadline, and known referral instructions. Do not send a long biography or ask the person to rewrite your materials. If they agree, thank them and follow their preferred process. Tell them the outcome when appropriate, but do not make them responsible for updates from the employer.
A referral can place your application in a known channel or add credible context. It does not guarantee an interview, and employees may have different levels of influence. You still need an accurate, role-specific application. Prepare that evidence with the ATS-friendly resume guide.
