Should I include a photo on my resume?

Usually not in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several other markets where resume photos are uncommon. In some countries and industries, a professional photo is customary. Follow local expectations and the employer's instructions rather than applying one rule worldwide.

Use three questions: Does the employer request or discourage a photo?. What is normal for this role and country?. Does the image provide job-relevant information?. For a typical office, technical, healthcare, or operations application in a no-photo market, the image uses space without proving qualifications. It may also expose information related to protected characteristics earlier than necessary. Keep the resume focused on experience and skills. For acting, modeling, and some performance roles, an employer may request a headshot or portfolio image. Follow the industry's submission format instead of treating the resume photo as a general rule. A LinkedIn or professional profile commonly includes a headshot even when the resume does not. You can include a profile or portfolio link when it supports the application, but check that the public information is current and consistent with your materials. Use a recent, clear, professional image that matches local norms. Do not crop another person out of a social photo or use heavy filters. Keep the file size reasonable and make sure the image does not interfere with text extraction or reading order.

When you are unsure, review reputable local career guidance or ask a recruiter familiar with that market. The employer's written instructions take priority. Keep the remaining document readable with the ATS-friendly resume guide and review the purpose of a resume.
