Can an ATS read a PDF resume?

Usually, yes. Most current applicant tracking systems can extract text from a normal, text-based PDF resume. Parsing can still vary by system and file design, so the safest rule is to submit the format requested by the employer. If the application asks for DOCX, do not substitute a PDF simply because its layout looks better.

A readable PDF contains selectable text in a simple reading order. Standard section headings, familiar fonts, and a single-column structure reduce ambiguity. Problems are more likely when the resume is a scanned image, places important information inside graphics, or relies on complex columns, text boxes, icons, headers, and footers. A parser may extract all the words but assign them to the wrong fields. For example, a date placed far from its employer could be attached to the wrong role. This is why visual appearance alone is not a sufficient test. Open the PDF and confirm that you can select and copy the text. Paste the text into a plain-text editor and check the reading order. Verify that your name, contact details, employers, titles, dates, education, and skills remain understandable. Reopen the uploaded file in the employer's application, when a preview is available.
