LinkedIn Open to Work offers three visibility choices: all LinkedIn members, recruiters only, and visible only to you. Public visibility signals availability to your network and current company. Recruiters only shares your interest with LinkedIn Recruiter users, but privacy is not guaranteed. Choose based on who may see the signal and your comfort with that exposure.

How it works

  • All LinkedIn members: LinkedIn says this includes recruiters and people at your current company. It adds an Open to Work photo frame. This is the clearest broad signal, and it is also the most public.
  • Recruiters only: LinkedIn describes this as visible to people using LinkedIn Recruiter. It says it takes steps to prevent Recruiter users at your current company from seeing your shared career interests, but it cannot guarantee complete privacy. Do not treat the setting as an invisible job search.
  • Visible only to you: LinkedIn says your job preferences still help tailor your job recommendations. The setting does not broadcast the Open to Work signal to other members.

The setting is about the Open to Work signal and job preferences. It does not make the rest of your LinkedIn profile private. People may still infer that you are exploring roles from your public activity, connections, or direct conversations. Check the current controls in your account because LinkedIn may change its interface or regional options.

Why it matters

The right setting depends on the risk you can accept and the audience you want to reach. Public visibility can help people in your network notice your search, but it can also alert colleagues. Recruiters-only may be a better fit when you want a narrower signal, as long as you understand LinkedIn's privacy caveat. Visible only to you keeps job recommendations useful without announcing availability through this feature.

A choice in practice

Maya works at a company where her manager does not know she is exploring other roles. She wants recruiters to know her target job titles and locations but does not want a public photo frame. She chooses recruiters only and reviews the wording of her profile for accuracy. She still avoids treating the setting as a confidentiality guarantee, because LinkedIn explicitly says it cannot promise that.

Her friend Theo has already told his employer he is leaving and wants former colleagues to know he is available. He chooses all LinkedIn members because a broad network signal suits his situation. Both candidates still need a clear headline, relevant experience, and direct outreach when appropriate. The setting does not create evidence of fit by itself.

Common misconception

"Recruiters only" does not mean "secret from my employer." LinkedIn takes protective steps for current-company Recruiter users, but explicitly warns that complete privacy is not guaranteed. It also does not mean every recruiter can see the signal; the described audience is people using LinkedIn Recruiter. If your situation requires strict confidentiality, evaluate the setting against that risk before enabling it.

Another misconception is that the green frame is necessary to appear in recruiter searches. LinkedIn describes the recruiters-only choice as a way to share career interests with LinkedIn Recruiter users. A profile's relevance, experience, location preferences, and the recruiter's search all matter. Do not infer a guaranteed ranking or response from the choice alone.

Use LinkedIn's current Open to Work help page for the platform's own description of each audience and its privacy limit. If you are ready to contact someone about a role, the recruiter messaging guide explains how to do it with a relevant, low-pressure note.

To apply this: Write a recruiter message after choosing your visibility setting.
